Welcoming a newborn into the world is such a special time, and capturing those first precious moments is something we at Dandelion Studio love doing for families across Northern Ireland. I’m Emma, and whether you’re travelling in from Craigavon or just down the road, I’m here to help make sure your little one feels cosy and calm before we start snapping away. Newborn photography can take a bit of patience, but trust me—it’s all worth it!
Let’s start with the basics. If you’ve got a newborn at home, you’ll know they tend to have their sleepy moments—and we want to take full advantage of those! The best time for photos is usually within the first two weeks, when they’re still in that super sleepy phase. Ideally, book your shoot just after a good feed, when they’re milk-drunk and ready for a wee nap. The earlier in the day, the better too—babies (and parents!) are often a bit more settled in the morning.
Top Tip: Don’t be worrying if your little one isn’t in the mood right away. We’ll work on their time, and I’ve got all the patience in the world to wait until they’re happy.
Now, here’s a trick that works a treat—bring something that smells like home. It could be a blanket, a soft toy, or even a favourite muslin cloth. Newborns love anything that reminds them of Mum or Dad, and that familiar scent can help them feel safe. Plus, it’ll make the photos feel even more personal to your family.
Studio Comfort: I’ll have the studio warm and toasty—just the way newborns like it! So, no need to worry about them feeling the cold.
When it comes to dressing your little one, less is more. Soft, simple outfits are best—nothing that’s too fussy or tricky to change. Babies are happiest when they’re comfortable, and we want them looking all natural in their photos. Some parents even prefer just a nappy or a swaddle—whatever works for your wee one!
Layer Up: If you’re worried about the cold, we can always layer blankets, which we can easily adjust without disturbing baby too much.
Here’s something you might not realise: babies are like little emotional sponges. They pick up on how we’re feeling, so if you’re calm, they’ll feel more settled too. I know that sounds easier said than done, especially if you’re juggling all those new-parent feels, but the more relaxed you are, the smoother the shoot will go.
No Pressure: And remember, I’m here to make this process as stress-free as possible. We’ll take breaks, have a cuppa if needed, and get the shots at baby’s pace—no rush at all.
Every baby is different, and some might take a wee bit longer to settle than others—that’s perfectly okay! The most important thing is to enjoy the moment and trust that we’ll get those gorgeous shots, no matter what. I’ve worked with loads of newborns here at Dandelion Studio, so you’re in safe hands.
If you’re ready to book in or have any questions, just give me a shout! I’m always here for a chat, and I can’t wait to help you capture those first special memories of your little one.
